What is the Diocesan School of Biblical Studies?

The Diocesan School of Biblical Studies (DSBS) is a serious study of all seventy-three writings in the Catholic canon of scriptures, joining the best of contemporary biblical scholarship with a desire for personal spiritual enrichment and a love for the use of the scriptures in the Church. Based on a design pioneered in the Archdiocese of Denver and revised by the University of Dallas, the Bible School has run successfully in the Diocese of La Crosse for twenty years. The "average" class day runs from 9:00 AM until 3:30 PM, on one Saturday a month, through a nine-month academic year. Three hours of lecture by seasoned faculty are balanced with three hours of small group discussion based on the students' responses to focused study questions.

If interest in each area is sufficient, the School's sixth cohort will operate at parallel sites in the Wausau (generally the second Saturday of the month) and La Crosse (on the fourth Saturday of the month) areas. Participants in the program who have conflicts on a given weekend at their primary teaching site are able (well, frankly encouraged) to travel the extra distance to "make up" the session at the other teaching location.

Already in the first two years of study, participants will have encountered the most important literary styles in the Bible, while completion of the  whole four years  of study will give them a college-level introduction to the whole of God's word. On the back of this brochure you will find an outline of the sequence of books  and themes for the four-year course of studies. Up to four (4) college credits in religious studies can be earned from Viterbo University for successful completion of the four years of work. Periodically, the faculty will offer study trips abroad to biblical lands.

Who is this for?
Any hungry person of faith will benefit from DSBS-parish catechists, school teachers, permanent deacons, Diocesan Lay Formation Institute grads, and regular bible readers looking for something beyond the basics. While the course of studies is taught by Catholics, and for Catholics, Bible readers of nearly any Christian background will find the study rewarding, and are most welcome to join us.

What does it cost?
The annual tuition of $300 covers teaching stipends, facility costs, and the noon meal. Additional book costs will range from $30-80 per year. Some scholarship monies are available.

Return APPLICATION and a $50 downpayment towards the $300 tuition for the first year to:
